Dolphin & UCC met for the first time under lights in the AIL at the Mardyke on a bitterly cold Friday night.
The home side started strongly and were first on the score board with a penalty from Kevin O’Keeffe in the 16th minute. Dolphin were eying up an equaliser until referee Shane Kierans was alerted by his assistant to foul play and the penalty was reversed. From the resultant lineout, centre Murray Linn broke through the Dolphin defence to score under the posts allowing O’Keeffe to make it 10-0 for UCC.
Just four minutes later Brian Scott crossed the line after some good Dolphin mauling and Cillian Monahan made it 10-7. Shortly afterwards John Fitzgerald was pushed over by the entire Dolphin side after 32 minutes and seconds later in became Black Friday at the Dyke. Play was suspended while electricians got to the source of the issue and got the lights working again, the players had to warm up again so there was approx a 20 minute delay in proceedings.
The game restarted with a successful Monahan conversion and Dolphin were 14-7 ahead. With the first half drawing to a close, John Fitzgerald drove over again to put Dolphin 19-10 ahead.
Early in the 2nd half Monahan made it 22-10 with a penalty. UCC came back into bonus point range with a converted try but Monahan made in 4/5 from kicks with another penalty to deny the home side a bonus point.
