Weekend Results 12/02/2012

It was a very good weekend for most of the clubs teams, the highlights being the AIL victory over the League Leaders St Mary’s College, U/21′s still on top of the South Western Conference and J2′s qualifying for the league final.

AIL   Dolphin 12- St Mary’s College 8

Having already beaten Clontarf & Young Munsters the odds were against Dolphin beating a top two side for the 3rd time at Musgrave Park. However Dolphin once again upset the odds.

From the kick off, a St Mary’s forward knocked the ball on and with a player in front of him playing the ball, the referee awarded a penalty which Barry Keeshan converted with 59 seconds on the clock.

With the wind at their backs the visitors put on quite a bit of pressure but the Dolphin defensive line held strong and it was keeshan who was again on the score card in the 17th minute with a 2nd penalty. Mary’s then hit back in the 50th minute with a try from Mark Sexton to narrow the gap but just  6 minutes later Barry Keeshan made it 9-5 with a drop goal.

Keeshan was again on target in the 63rd minute with a penalty, St Mary’s set up themselves up for the win with a penalty from ray Crotty in the 77th minute, however the home side held out for a deserved victory.

U21   Dolphin 15- Young Munster 8

Dolphin extended their leadership on the South Western Conference and are just one victory away from qualifying for the All ireland qualifiers for the first time. They opened the scoring with a penalty from Fionn cronin but Young Munster soon equalised. Steven Collins gave Dolphin the lead with a try, conveted by Cronin, again Young Munster were next to score, making it 10-8, however Eoin O’Shaughnessy scored the final try giving a 15-8 victory.

J2′s  Cork Constitution 10  Dolphin 14

Dolphin defeated Cork Constitution in the J2 league semi final  will Mark Long scoring a try and three penalties – Carrigaline defeated Skibbereen in the other semi final. Dolphin and Carrigaline were in the same section in phase 2 of the league with Carrigaline winning the fixture at Moneygourney but the sides finished level on points but Dolphin had a positive points difference just 1 point better.

The U/19′s were defeated by 16-3 by Cork Constitution in a league fixture under lights at Templehill.

The U/17′s continue to improve and had a good 35-12 league victory over Dunmanway.

The U/13′s after a sizeable victory last week came up gainst a determined Kinsale side. Despite the scoreline and the weather conditions it was a very entertaining game, while Dolphin dominated the territory the game went into the break scoreless. Kinsale did not have many opportunities in the 2nd half but early on they scored the games only try. While Dolphin tried valientely for the 2nd half Kinsale tackled hard and held on to victory.
