Following up from the previous announcement of the restart of women’s rugby within the club, we have founded a Women’s committee led by Jane O’Leary and supported by Sorcha Healy and Deborah Linn who have extensive experience with girls age grade rugby in the South Munster Girls Leagues.  We are kicking off with the following:

Senior Women’s Rugby:
We have already recruited a number of players who are 18.5+ and have many years of experience in the Munster age grade Leagues and Cups and indeed have played since mini level.  We are hoping that this will quickly build to a full squad that will be eligible for the Munster Leagues.  We would love to hear from any women who would be interested to take up the sport or who have played in the past to get in contact with us. Fingers crossed that we will be able to get these young women onto the pitches at Musgrave park for training or touch or tag at some point in the number of months. Any newbie who even wishes to join the current women or tag please as they say Give It a Try!!

Age Grade U14-U18:
We have recruited a number of coaches sufficient to have teams at U14, U16 and U18.  We hope that over the next number of months that again we will recruit to have full squads at these levels so watch out for the announcement of return to training  (fingers crossed) and associated expressions of interest forms (for COVID pods) and we would love to see the current membership encourage their sisters and nieces or cousins  or  female classmates to join us for a few sessions to join in the fun. Parent’s of teen rugby playing girls, will tell you that the growth in self-confidence and leadership skills acquired is so beneficial in their personal development.

Mini Girls Rugby:
At U12 level girls can of course (and should do if they wish) play alongside the boys in the mini training and fixtures.  Our experience however is that mini girls who are new to the sport gain a lot from the camaraderie of also playing in a girls only team. It gives them the space and confidence to grow their skills in a supportive atmosphere where the diversity in experience is more acknowledged. We have seen once shy 11-year-old girls transform into try scoring and tackling machines!!  We have seen mothers and fathers cry as little shy “Aoife “slides across the line and cores or wins tackler of the month as technique wins out over brute force.
