Happy Birthday Cola!
Yesterday some of Norman (Cola) Coleman’s teammates travelled to celebrate his birthday, including Noel Kavanagh from Dublin.
An Honorary Life Member, there is a significant family connection with the club. His father Dicky captained Dolphin to a first Munster Senior Cup in 1921 and went on to become Club President in 1957/58. His older brother Dick was President in 1973/74.
Cola was a talented player who played many times for Munster, he played on the Munster team in January 1954 which ran the All Blacks close, a narrow 6-3 defeat.
From a club point of view he will always be remembered for his part in the Munster Cup winning side of 1955/56. John O’Meara was club captain and fellow international Gerald Reidy was vice captain, both were injured and missed out on the final. Cola who had been club captain two seasons previously took over as captain for the day.
It would not happen now, but Dolphin went through the campaign without scoring a try. They defeated Young Munster 12-6 in the semi final and Sunday’s Well 3-0 in the final, thanks to the golden boot of Cola. Another brother Butch was also in the Senior squad that season.
He became the 3rd Coleman to serve as President in 1977-78.
Always a proud Dolphin man,a pleasure to be with, Happy Birthday Cola, here’s to many more.
